About

My name is Iva Mihova. I'm an archaeologist specializing in Archaeometry, the application of scientific methods and techniques from disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, etc., to address archaeological questions and interpret the material record of human history. My main area of research is glass artefacts; I'm interested in understanding the chemical composition of ancient glass in order to know more about provenance, technology and trade of this specific material in our archaeological record.
I'm currently finishing my Master’s dissertation that places an emphasis on the chemical characterisation of Roman glassware from the Late Antiquity period belonging to a cave site in Catalonia to obtain my MSc in Advanced Studies in Archaeology at the University Barcelona in Spain. I hold a BA in History from the University of Granada.
My career has included archaeological field work both in academia and in commercial archaeology around Catalonia, Spain. With the University of Barcelona, I have excavated at the Medium Palaeolithic site Mediona (Sant Quintí de Mediona, Catalonia), the Neolithic and Bronze Age site of Cova Bonica (Vallirana, Catalonia) and the Medium Palaeolithic site of Cova dels Muricecs (Tremp, Catalonia) with the Grup de Recerca del Quaternari (Universitat de Barcelona). Concerning my commercial archaeology experience, I have partaken in excavations at the palaeochannel of Domeny (Girona, Catalonia).
I have completed courses such as “Introduction to Molecular Spectroscopy” from the University of Manchester, “Advanced Archaeological Remote Sensing” from Durham University, “Osteoarchaeology: The Truth in Our Bones” from the University of Leiden, and “Egyptian hieroglyphic writing, beginner level. Theoretical foundations and practical development” from the University of Granada.
